Using Construction and Carpentry to Teach Mathematics

People have been learning mathematics through carpentry and construction since the pyramids were built more than 5,000 years ago, but schools have largely neglected that educational tool in mathematics instruction. Building to Teach is a mathematics curriculum that began in the Alexandria Seaport Foundation boatbuilding apprentice program in which young people work alongside adult mentors to learn mathematics while building boats. The Alexandria Seaport Foundation will be featured in the next program in the Dropping Back In series, airing this fall on public television stations nationwide. (Check local listings.)
